Definition
(Noun) The Local Defence Volunteers, renamed by Churchill: early WWII British home-defense units, organized (after a fashion) and armed (after a fashion) to fight the expected invasion.Composed largely of men beyond the military service age.
Usage: Almost everyone, upon hearing that the Local Defence Volunteers had been renamed the Home Guard, agrees that it was an inspired choice.
